Loon
Loon Folklore
In many Native American traditions, the loon appears at the very beginning of the world. In those first ages, the earth was nothing but a vast, unbroken ocean, and land could not exist until it was drawn up from the depths.
The loon dove beneath the dark waters, slipping far below the surface where light could not reach, and returned with mud clutched in its beak. From this small offering, the Great Spirit shaped solid ground, and the world began to take form.
Other stories tell how the Common Loon came to wear its bright white markings around its neck.
A blind boy once befriended a loon, who carried him beneath the water as it dove again and again into the quiet depths. With each descent, the boy’s sight slowly returned, until at last he could see the world clearly.
In gratitude, he placed a necklace of shells and beads around the loon’s neck—a gift that became the white feathers it bears to this day, a lasting sign of healing, trust, and the bond between them.
